Scanning Documents with your iPhone

Updated: Sep 21, 2020

It is often necessary to send documents to your Attorney that your Attorney will need to provide to the Court. These documents are required to be in PDF format, so simply taking a picture of a document will not work. Taking a picture of a document and sending it to your Attorney’s email often makes the document unreadable or will not be good enough quality to send to the Court.

Fortunately, it is easy to scan a document and send it to your Attorney with a built in feature on your iPhone. Follow the instructions below to do so:

  1. Open up the “Notes” app on your iPhone (hint: you can say, “Hey Siri, open up Notes” if you don’t know where it is).

  2. When you open up the app, you may need to click on the “Notes” folder.

  3. Once you are in Notes, at the bottom right hand side of the screen, you will see a square icon with a pen, this is usually yellow. Click this icon.

  4. Click on the picture of a camera that pops up.

  5. From the menu that pops up, click “scan documents”.

  6. Hold your phone in front of a well lit document to scan. If the scanner is in auto mode, it will automatically detect the document and scan. If not, you will need to take a photo yourself, you can update to auto mode by clicking “auto” in the upper right hand corner of this screen. Hint: you may need to click the camera button to take the scan picture depending on your phone.

  7. You can scan multiple pages into one file by continuing to take pictures of each page.

  8. Once you have your document done, click “save” in the bottom right hand corner.

  9. If you return to the main notes screen, it will show your scanned documents. Click on the document you want to email to your attorney and the square box with an arrow through it in the upper right hand corner. Select “mail” for email, type your attorney’s email address and click “send”.

  10. Done!
