Richard is a 1978 graduate of Pennfield High School in Battle Creek Michigan. He is also a graduate of KCC where he played baseball. He graduated from Western Michigan University in 1982. He graduated from Thomas Cooley Law school in 1987. He clerked for a Jackson County Circuit Court Judge before working for Legal Aid Bureau for 10 years representing abused women, indigent people, and helping people get their SSI benefits. He had a brief stint as a sole practitioner before working for Hettinger & Hettinger for the last 20 years specializing in Social Security benefits.
His wife is a Spartan and teacher. His daughter is a teacher, a realtor and the fund raiser for his granddaughters school. She too is a Western Michigan University graduate. Her husband is a local criminal defense attorney and former prosecutor. They have two wonderful children who keep him young. His son is a graduate of the University of Michigan and received his masters degree from a school for writers in Atlanta Georgia.
